Things I have learned in the last 24 (or so) hours:

Or, as Archie Goodwin once said: "There are two kinds of statistics, the kind you look up and the kind you make up."

1. Following a 100+ degree (Fahrenheit) day, the temperature in a house where the air conditioner has suddenly stopped working rises at a rate of about 2 degrees per hour after sunset.

2. Driving 20 miles to the next town to save $30 on a hotel room is totally worth it.

3. Following a 100+ degree (Fahrenheit) day, there will be 14 other families checking into the same hotel because their air conditioners crapped out on them, too.

4. I do, in fact, need my CPAP machine to get a good nights' sleep. (I forgot the power cord and had to sleep without it for the first time since I started using it in late October.) I woke up completely no less 4 separate times in the 6 hours I spent trying to sleep, slept like crap overall, and gave up trying altogether at 5am. I used my spare time to depilate my legs. If that doesn't speak of desperation, I don't know what does.

5. When you start wondering, "Is it really worth that $35 a month we're paying for our service agreement with the A/C company?" the answer is "YES!"

6. At 3 in the afternoon directly following a really nasty thunderstorm, the voters at an outlying polling station are outnumbered by poll workers by 5 to 1.

7. When the air conditioning is repaired, a house that has achieved an indoor temperature of 94 degrees cools at a rate of about 3 degrees per hour.

8. Tom has become quite the expert in getting out of breakaway collars. We have clocked him at 6 escapes in less than an hour.
