NaNoWriMo 2007

'Tis finished, 'tis done.
I'll be honest. I didn't think I was going to be able to do it this year. I worked in much more of a "fits and starts" pace this year, bu I was able to keep well on top of my word count--well, more or less--until Thanksgiving. While I was home, I wrote a little, but on the way back I was thinking that I was so horribly behind that I'd never make it up. Part of this was due to the rotten allergy attack I always have if I spend more than one night at my mother's house in town. I was thinking that I'd never feel like writing, like making up the lost word count and then finishing in the next few days.
That night, I wrote 3,000 words. I wasn't caught up, not by a long shot, but my daily minimum was reduced from 2,400 to 1,800. I didn't get a lot of writing done over the next couple of days because of my exceeding important weekly social engagements (i.e. knitting groups), and I woke up this morning knowing I'd have to write about 2,500 words a day to finish. Totally doable.
So, I took my daughter to school, went to the nearest Starbuck's, and wrote. Then I ate lunch, drove to the library, and wrote. At 3:30, I left the library, drove back to the Starbuck's to meet my husband to pick up Boo so we could meet my mom and stepsister and nieces for dinner...and wrote. By the time I left for dinner, I had written over 7,000 words for the day, and my total in my own (slightly generous) word processor was 50,100. I came home after dinner and wrote about 500 words just to be sure, then pasted that sucker in. For the record, my processor's word count was 50,800, the NaNoWriMo count 50,600.
In some ways, I'm a lot more pleased with this year's effort than last year's. I think I did a much better job writing an actual story, and not just a glorified outline. The downside to this is that, while I did reach 50,000 words, I'm a great deal further away from actually finishing the story than I was last year. I found a stopping place and slapped on an epilogue, but there's a considerable chunk of the story missing. As in, pretty much the entire fifth act (if we were talking about a tv show), and a good chunk of the fourth. But what is there is, I think, a much better starting point.
And besides, I have two whole days now to try to finish it. :)
